BRZRKR screenwriter cites The Matrix as inspiration for upcoming adaptation

News on the Keanu Reeves-featured adaptation of the comic book series, BRZRKR, made its way out of San Diego Comic-Con. The screenwriter for the upcoming live-action film adaptation, Mattson Tomlin, spoke about the process and the inspirations he’s borrowing for the script, and it’s also been confirmed that the previously announced anime series adaptation that will join the Netflix movie will be developed by animation studio Production IG.

The information was announced at BRZRKR panel at SDCC 2022. During the panel, which also featured Reeves and the bestselling writer and co-writer of the New York Times series Matt Kindt and series illustrator by Ron GarneyTomlin talked about the pressure of adapting the script and gave a few other films that serve as inspiration, including those from 2006 Darren Aronofsky film Fountain, The tree of life realized by Terrence Malik from 2011, and other Reeves projects like The matrixamong others.

In addition to Tomlin’s comments, the panel also included the announcement that Production IG, the animation studio behind the likes of ghost in the shell, Haikyu!!and “The Ninth Jedi” short film that was part of last year’s anime anthology series, Star Wars: Visions will work on the series. They have also worked on anime series a list of video games such as personas 5 and Persona 5: Royal. The anime series will join the movie on Netflix and will consist of two seasons, although neither project has a release date currently announced.

BRZRKR is a 12-issue comic book limited series that debuted in March 2021. The series’ story follows a character known as B, an immortal warrior who has been a mortal warrior through many parts of human history. Nowadays, B finds himself working with the US government to fight battles too dangerous for the average soldier in exchange for the truth behind his existence and how to end it.

The series is published by BOOM! Studios. The announcement of the live-action and anime adaptations of the comic book series was first made in March 2021 when Netflix secured the rights to BOOM! Tomlin has been announced to write the script for the upcoming live-action film in October 2022. BRZRKR is created by Reeves and was co-written by him and Kindt. In addition to these two and Garney, other members of the comic team include Bill Crabtreewho made colors for art, letters by Clem Robinsand character designs and covers by Rafael Grampa.
