A Star Wars Story writer reveals Anthony Daniels’ surprising cameo

The latest film in the Star Wars franchise is drastically different from any other episode, but there is one particular aspect that sets it apart.

And it has to do with who is not in Solo: A Star Wars Story.

Warning: Minor spoilers for Solo: A Star Wars Story below.

The adorable C-3PO and R2-D2 droids have already been featured in every episode, including a cameo in the first spinoff movie Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. But they don’t appear in the Han Solo movie.

The revelation comes after Mark Hamill himself confirmed Anthony Daniels’ involvement, with many assuming he meant the actor would reprise his role as the Golden Protocol Droid for the new film. But Daniels is actually playing a surprisingly different character, as co-writer Jonathan Kasdan revealed.

Kasdan revealed that Daniels’ character actually appears in one of the trailers for Solo: A Star Wars Story, so many fans have probably seen the character before but couldn’t recognize him – because he’s a Wookiee.

There is a sequence in the movie where Han and Chewbacca run into trouble and receive help from a helpful Wookiee who helps them escape.

“In the Butterfly type spinoff story, the Wookiee who helps them escape, Chewbacca’s best friend, is played by Anthony Daniels – and beckons him to join them as they escape on another ship, ”Kasdan revealed to Uproxx.

They go their separate ways, but not before they share an emotional moment that leads us to believe that Chewbacca may have a reunion with his family in the new movie. The jury is still out, but the Wookiee in the particular scene was definitely not his wife.

Although this is the first Star Wars movie without the appearance of the two droids, co-writer Lawrence Kasdan was quick to point out that it wasn’t the film’s only major deviation.

“There are a lot of things in this movie that are different from all the others,” Lawrence said.

Fans will be able to see it all for themselves when Solo: A Star Wars Story premieres in theaters on May 15.
